KNEVA Baking Steel (Oven Steel) — Compact & Large
Crisp pizza bases and properly browned crusts, from the oven you already own.
A slab of carbon steel that stores heat and gives it back to the base of whatever you're baking—pizza, sourdough, baguettes.
Two sizes, for different ovens and the way you bake. Compact opens up steel baking to suitable smaller countertop ovens and is easy to remove and store between uses. Large gives you more baking room and a thicker 6 mm build.
Two sizes — choose your fit
COMPACT — Small oven. Serious baking.
330 × 275 × 5 mm
A smaller countertop oven can still be your starting point for serious pizza and bread baking. Compact brings a 5 mm carbon-steel baking surface to ovens that can accommodate its smaller footprint with the required clearance and rack support.
Practical for pizzas around 25 cm / 10 inches, smaller sourdough loaves and mini baguettes. Its compact size also makes it easier to remove once fully cooled and store between bakes—useful when you share your oven with other cooking.
Choose Compact for a suitable smaller oven, or when its baking surface meets your everyday needs and you want convenient removal and storage.
LARGE — More room. Thicker 6 mm steel.
406 × 340 × 6 mm
A larger surface of approximately 1,380 cm², with a thicker 6 mm carbon-steel build, for bigger bakes and more room to load.
Practical for pizzas around 30 cm / 12 inches, sourdough boules, bâtards and short baguettes. Choose Large when you regularly need the extra surface and your oven can accommodate its footprint with the required clearance and rack support.
Pizza sizes are suggested guides that leave working room, not maximum capacities.
Smaller oven? Check our Compact Steel oven-fit guide.
Why choose carbon steel?
- Stores heat and transfers it directly into the base of your pizza or bread.
- A solid, durable steel alternative to a ceramic baking stone.
- Food-safe carbon steel with a thick, durable build.
- BPA-free.
More than an oven steel
The same steel can also be used in suitable, securely supported cooking setups:
- On a gas hob: use as a comal for pita, roti and flatbread.
- On the barbecue: cook smash burgers and charred vegetables.
- For outdoor cooking: take it camping for a suitable cooking setup over a fire.
Check that your appliance or cooking setup is suitable for the steel's size and weight, and follow the appliance manufacturer's instructions.
Your first bake
- Place the steel on a supported middle rack of a cold oven.
- Preheat to 230–250°C for 30–45 minutes—it needs time to soak up heat. Follow your recipe and oven instructions; heating time varies with the oven and steel.
- Slide your dough or pizza directly onto the steel with a peel.
- Bake. Watch the crust colour.
- Let it cool fully in the oven before removing.
It arrives pre-seasoned. Rinse and dry before first use, then bake. The seasoning develops with continued use.
Care
- Wipe clean with a dry cloth or brush; a light soap wash if needed.
- Dry fully, then re-oil lightly.
- A darkening patina is normal—that's seasoning, not damage.
- Hand-wash only. Keep it out of the dishwasher and store dry.
What's in the box
One steel in your chosen size: 330 × 275 × 5 mm or 406 × 340 × 6 mm.
The product images show both options; each order contains one steel, not both.
FAQ
Which size should I buy?
Start with your oven and your usual bake. Compact suits smaller oven spaces and everyday bakes, with convenient removal and storage once cooled. Large offers more baking surface and a thicker 6 mm build.
Measure your oven, then cut cardboard to 330 × 275 mm or 406 × 340 mm and check it in a cold, switched-off oven. It should sit flat with the required clearance, allow the door to close and have suitable rack support. Check your oven's rack-load requirements. Remove the cardboard before heating.
Will Compact fit every countertop oven?
Check your exact model. Compact needs room for its 330 × 275 mm footprint plus the required clearance and suitable rack support. Our fit guide compares published tray/rack dimensions; those comparisons do not represent physical testing of every model.
My oven fits both. Do I need Large?
If Compact meets your everyday baking needs, it can be the right choice even when both fit. Choose Large when you regularly need more surface for bigger bakes or extra loading room.
Is it pre-seasoned?
Yes. Rinse, dry and bake. The seasoning develops with continued use.
Can I put it in the dishwasher?
No. Hand-wash, dry thoroughly and re-oil lightly. Dishwasher detergent strips the seasoning.
Will it warp?
No. It will not warp. Let it cool fully in the oven rather than moving it hot or cooling it rapidly.
